Introduction to Heavy Duty Chain

Heavy duty chains are robust and durable chains designed to handle high loads and demanding operating conditions. They are commonly used in various industrial applications that require reliable power transmission and the ability to withstand heavy loads, shock, and vibration. Heavy duty chain has thicker side plates, which not only drastically increases the strength and fatigue resistance of a roller chain but also reduces stretching and wear over time.

Components of Heavy Duty Chain

Roller Chain Bushing
As the internal plates of the heavy duty roller chain are held together by bushings, they perform a crucial role. There is lesser damage on the sprocket teeth and the plates in locations where they contact the pins because the pins holding the outer plates are passed through bushings supporting the inner plates.
There are two types of bushing configurations: solid and divided. Bushings lengthen the life of the chain and enhance performance by reducing stress on the inner link plates and pins. They are made of high-strength, low-friction components. The chain must be installed and maintained correctly, and you must choose the appropriate bushing for the application to provide the longest possible service life.

Roller Chain Pins
Pins are a crucial part of the heavy duty roller chain. The chain’s edginess is due to the Pins. They join the roller chain’s links and distribute the load over the entire chain. Because these surfaces are more susceptible to deterioration, the pins and bushing should be given the most attention when lubricating chains.
Pins and bushing give the entire assembly corrosion resistance and strength. Pins can be thermal, case-hardened, or thru-hardened, depending on the quality.

Roller Chain Roller
The link can turn freely per its gears due to the roller. For instance, unrestricted turning permits less friction during the rolling encounter when the rolling chain is connected to a toothed wheel, such as a sprocket.

Roller Chain Side Plates
Side plates are utilized to reinforce and secure the internal parts. To allow the inner and outer links to transmit the tensile load from pin to pin, the side plates largely handle the tension throughout the chain links.

Roller Chain Connecting Links
To join two straight links together, employ roller chain connecting links. Connecting links are flat with the chain’s outside surface and feature a connector at either end.

Types of Heavy Duty Chain

H Series

H Series chain differs from the ANSI G8 Series chain in the thickness of the link plates. The link plates have the same thickness as the link plates of the next larger pitch size in ANSI G8 Series. The increased thickness of the link plates provides a 9% greater capacity for fatigue strength.
Compared to to the previous series, the wear life of the H Series is doubled by using solid bushes instead of curled bushes.
In short, H Series chains are especially suitable for situations where the load is heavy and operating speed is low (up to 50 m/min) or where operating conditions are severe.

HT Series

HT Series chain provides a significantly higher Tensile Strength (up to 19%) than ANSI G8 Series chain by applying through-hardened pins and link plates of the next larger pitch size in ANSI G8 series.
Compared to the previous series, the wear life of the HT Series is doubled by using solid bushes instead of curled bushes.
HT Series chain also provides a higher fatigue strength and is best suited for low operating speeds (up to 50 m/min). Dimensions of the chain are identical to the H Series chain.

SUPER Series

The dimensions of these series are identical to those of ANSI G8 Series chain. The special design of the SUPER Series link plate delivers exceptional performance. The Lube Groove Bushes ensure longer and better lubrication which results in an extended chain life. The pin holes are critically formed and ball drifted, while the pins are through-hardened for greater fatigue strength.
Super Series chains offer 9% higher tensile strength than the equivalent size ANSI G8 Series chain. Super Series chains can be used to replace the next larger pitch size of ANSI G8 Series, making them ideal for applications where chain space is limited. Best suited for low speed operating conditions (up to 50 m/min).

SUPER-H Series

The thickness of the SUPER-H Series link plates is the same as the next larger pitch size of SUPER Series chain. The pins are also through-hardened which provides a higher tensile strength and a higher fatigue strength than SUPER Series chain. The pin holes of the outer link plates are critically formed and ball drifted. The holes of the roller link plates are ring coined to increase fatigue strength.
SUPER-H Series chains can be used to replace the next larger size of ANSI standard chain, making them ideal for applications where space is limited. Best suited for low speed operating conditions (up to 50 m/min).

In addition, prior to delivery, the lumber transfer chains are coated with a layer of anti-rust oil film which ensures long lasting lubrication and wear reduction.

FAQ

Q: What is H series roller chain?

A: “H”Series chains are dimensionally identical to ANSI standard chains except that the sideplates are thicker. The heavier side plates provide some additional fatigue resistance. They are primarily intended for applications where occasional shock loads are likely to cause fatigue failures in the chain. Whilst there is an increase in tensile strength, the wear life of the case hardened pins remains the same as for standard chain.
Simplex"H” series chains operate on standard ANSI sprockets. Multiple strand "H" chain require non-standard ANSI sprockets because of the thicker side plates.

Q: Why is sprocket alignment important to heavy duty chain?

A: Minimizing Wear and Tear: When sprockets are correctly aligned, the load is evenly distributed across the chain and all the sprocket teeth. This equal distribution prevents excessive wear on one side of the chain or on certain teeth of the sprocket, thereby extending the life of both the chain and sprockets.
Reducing Energy Loss: Misalignment can result in increased friction as the chain engages with the sprocket teeth, leading to energy loss. This energy loss not only reduces the overall efficiency of the mechanical system but also puts additional stress on the chain, hastening its wear and reducing its lifespan.
Preventing Chain De-tracking and Slippage: Properly aligned sprockets ensure that the chain remains on track during its operation. Misalignment can cause the chain to derail or slip off the sprocket, leading to operational interruptions and potential damage to the chain, sprocket, or even the entire mechanical system.
Reducing Noise and Vibration: A well-aligned sprocket-chain interaction facilitates smooth operation, minimizing noise and vibration. These factors can contribute to operator comfort and machine health.

Q: What is heavy duty roller chain?

A: Heavy duty roller chains are designed with thicker side plates compared to standard ANSI B298.1 chains to withstand challenging environments.
