Introduction to Non-Standard Roller Chain

Non-standard roller chains are manufactured for applications that are limited by space or that do not require an extreme duty roller chain. Non-standard series chains feature solid rollers, heat treated components, and are shipped with a high-quality lubricant.

Types of Non-Standard Roller Chain

Hollow Pin Chains
Hollow pin roller chains without bushes are constructed on the same principle as Galle chains i.e. the link bearing is situated between pin and outer plate, resulting in an extremely small bearing area. This offers the advantage of high breaking strength and hollow pins with large inner diameters. Hollow pin roller chain is essentially the same thing as a standard roller chain just with "hollow-pins". This not only decreases the chain weight, but it also gives you the ability to place extended pins through the chain for conveying product. Many applications include; bakeries, overhead conveyors, elevators, poultry, agricultural, and a wide range of other applications.

Extended-pitch Chains
Extended-pitch chains with elongated pitches are designed for enhanced performance and durability in various applications. These chains are integral components in diverse sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and automotive, providing critical linkages for power transmission and conveying purposes. The extended pitch design allows for greater load-bearing capacity, improved wear resistance, and reduced maintenance requirements compared to traditional chain counterparts. The dimensions of these chains are similar to that of standard roller chains except the pitch is doubled, resulting in typically lower purchase and drive energy costs thanks to the reduction in the number of components per metre.

Double-pitch Chains
With dimensions similar to standard roller chains, except with twice the pitch, double pitch roller chains offer a lower price (as they use half the number of components) while still offering the same breaking load. They are ideal for use in slow to moderate speed applications. Transmission double pitch chains have a wasted link plate and small gearing rollers, while conveyor chain type double pitch chains have straight link plates and a large conveying roller.

Side Bow Chains
Side bow chains are generally used as conveyor or drag chains in applications that require curved tracks. The chains may have different bow radii. As a rule, the pin diameter of these chains is smaller, but conical pins or bi-conical bushes are also possible. This special pin shape allows curves to be negotiated in many applications that involve a variety of curve radii. These roller chains are typically found in conveyor applications, are available with attachments, and are supplied in materials such as standard carbon steel, stainless steel, or nickel-plated steel.

Attachment Chains
Attachment chains, also known as attachment roller chains, are specialized roller chains that feature attachments or extended pins at regular intervals along their length. These attachments can take various forms, such as plates, pins, or extended links, and they serve specific functions within various industrial applications.

Rollerless Chains
Rollerless chains are assembled without the roller and have the same dimesional and tensile strengths as standard ANSI/ASME chains. All chain components are heat-treated for maximum strength and wear resistance, as well as pre-loaded to minimize initial elongation. This series of chains is commonly used for hoist applications like elevators, lifts, cranes, and more.

Drawing the Plan
The first step is to design the chain plan and the component plan. To make the component drawing, we would have to take into account the clearance, the material and the treatment to be given to the product.

Place The Purchase Order For The Components
The next step would be to place an order to purchase the components we need. This step is mandatory if we manufacture internally or externally. For in-house manufacturing, if necessary, more material is ordered to start manufacturing.

Component Manufacturing Processes
The components have to go through different internal manufacturing processes: pins, sheaves, sheaths… When they are finished with these processes, they are sent to the lathes to be hardened, tempered, polished or shot-blasted. In some cases, depending on the material, they are also sent for cementing. If the components come from outside, such as fins and links, they are annealed for reaming (i.e. to give the final size of the hole).

Hardening and Tempering
After forging, plates and pins undergo a hardening and tempering process to further improve the strength and durability of the chain. This process involves heating the chain to high temperatures and then cooling it rapidly to harden it, followed by a slower heating process to reduce brittleness.

Testing And Verification
Our lathe foreman then performs quality control to ensure that the lathes are functioning properly and that they meet all the requirements for a quality product.

Assembly Of The Chain
Once we have all the components ready and all the quality tests have been passed, we will proceed to assemble the non-standard chain. To check that the design of the chain is correct, we first assemble a sample. If the result of the assembly is satisfactory, we will start with the assembly of the whole chain.

Packaging and Shipping
Once the quality of the non-standard chain has been checked, it is packed and shipped to the customer. The chain is shipped in sturdy boxes to ensure that it reaches the customer in perfect condition and in the shortest possible time.

FAQ

Q: What is non-standard roller chain?

A: Non-standard roller chain is a kind of chain used to transmit mechanical power. It is a type of chain drive and is widely used in household, industrial and agricultural machinery, including conveyors, plotters, printing presses, automobiles, motorcycles, and bike. It consists of a series of short cylindrical rollers linked together and driven by a gear called a sprocket. It is a simple, reliable and efficient power transmission device.

Q: What are different types of attachment chains?

A: There are mainly two types of Attachment Chain: Single Pitch and Double Pitch.
Single Pitch Attachment Chain
Single pitch attachment chains are based on roller chains with attachments added to make them suitable for conveying use. Due to the smaller chain pitch, this type of chain is ideal for short centre distances, and the conveying of small and light goods. Single pitch attachment chain has smooth transfer and low noise characteristics and can be used at relatively medium conveying speeds. Standard roller chain sprockets can be used in most cases.
Double Pitch Attachment Chain
This is the most commonly used attachment chain and is utilized widely in the automotive parts, electric, electronic, and precision machinery industries. Double pitch roller chain has the same basic construction as single pitch roller chain, but has twice the pitch length. A major benefit is that whilst larger conveyor lengths are possible, a double pitch chain uses only half the components of a single pitch chain in the same application, resulting in less components to wear.
The choice of sprockets depends on the roller type applied to the chain. Chain with S-type rollers can be driven by standard roller chain sprockets (> 30 teeth). The chain engages every second tooth. Special sprockets are needed when R-type rollers are used.

Industrial applications include conveyor systems, packaging machinery, and other industrial machinery.

Q: What are the key features of hollow pin chains?

A: Designed with pins extending from the pitch axis for short-pitch or long-pitch chains, these chains are manufactured from the best materials with excellent machining techniques according to customer requirements for the bearing of special attachments, pushing or pulling operations. Hollow pin chains are produced in desired lengths and dimensions and can be easily mounted and dismounted thanks to their protrusions. They are easier to transport and install than other chains. Hollow pin chains are specially produced and made of stainless steel and offer economical options with stylish designs.
Pins are mounted on the chain at desired intervals according to conveyor requirements. This ensures that the chain operates efficiently and for a long time at high levels. These chains are produced in carbon steel, zinc-chrome plated and stainless steel.
One of the main advantages of hollow pin chains, also called chains with extended pins, is that they can handle larger loads and transmit power over longer distances. The protruding pin of these chains leaves more space between the rollers, allowing the chain to absorb more shock and vibration, reducing wear and increasing its overall lifespan. The larger rollers also provide more surface area for the chain to rest on, helping to distribute the load more evenly and reduce the risk of breakage.
Hollow pin chains are used to transport functional components. There are two different versions of the chain: single-sided and double-sided extended double-way and triple pins with groove inserts for locking springs, Seeger rings or E-rings, and holes for splints or wire nails are provided as security elements. Depending on the application, they can be provided with different pin diameters and special forms (grooves, etc.) that allow the handling of various functional components.
The high precision of roller chains made with protruding pins also means they can operate in extreme environments, including high temperatures and low temperatures. These conditions can cause other types of chains to become brittle or weak, but roller chains made with lug pins can withstand these environments without problems.

Q: What are the benefits of non-standard high strength roller chains?

A: Excellent slip properties.
Outstanding fatigue resistance and chain traction.
Chain joints with particularly high strength.
Certification for the food industry.
Reduced maintenance requirements.
Longer lubrication intervals.
High wear resistance.

Q: Where can be side bow roller chains used for?

A: Warehouse technology, materials-handling industry.
Conveyor technology.
Electronics industry and PCB manufacture.
Feeding and automation technology.
Textile and clothing industry.

Q: What are the advantages of large non-standard roller chain?

A: The advantages of large non-standard roller chains mainly include the following aspects:
Wear resistance: Since the chain is equipped with rollers, there is less wear between the chain and the transmission components and the service life is longer.
Movement stability: The rollers can play a buffering role, making the chain less vibrating during operation and running more smoothly.
Energy saving: Due to the smooth movement of the chain, energy loss can be reduced and work efficiency improved.

Q: How to measure non-standard roller chain?

A: Roller Chain Pitch
The first dimension we will use is the pitch. This is the measurement from the center of one pin to the center of the next.
Side Plate Height
You can measure either the inside plate height or outside plate height. Non-standard roller chain has inside and outside plates that differ in height.
Side Plate Thickness
It is typically best to measure the inside and outside plate thickness because some metric roller chains feature inside and outside plates that have different thicknesses. The thickness of a side plate will also tell us if you have a heavy duty series roller chain.
Roller Chain Pin Diameter
This is a vital measurement because some specialty roller chains will have non-standard pin diameters.
Roller Diameter
Please note that some chains that are classed as a roller chain do not have rollers. When measuring a roller-less chain use the bushing diameter as the roller diameter and inform your customer service representative that you have a roller-less chain.
Roller Width
If you have a roller-less chain just measure the inside width of the inner side plates.
Overall Chain Width
Please make sure that you are not measuring the overall width of the master link and or offset link when you are taking this measurement.
