Introduction to British Standard Chain
British Standard roller chain is made in accordance with ISO 606 B, BS 228, and DIN 8187 European standards. These chains resemble standard ANSI roller chains. However, they are dimensionally different and in general do NOT operate over standard ANSI sprockets.
Components of British Standard Chain
Inner Plates
These are flat metal plates with holes through which the bush is pressed. Inner plates alternate with outer plates to form the chain.
Outer Plates
Similar to inner plates, outer plates are also flat metal plates, but they have slightly smaller holes to accommodate the bearing pin.
Rollers
Rollers are cylindrical components that sit between the inner plates. They are designed to reduce friction and wear by allowing the chain to roll smoothly over sprockets or gears.
Bearing Pins
Bearing pins are cylindrical pins that connect the inner and outer plates. They go through the bush in the inner plates and fix firmly in the outer plate to produce the articulating joint.
Bushings
Bushings are tubular components that sit inside the roller and on top of the bearing pin, between the inner plates.. They reduce friction and wear by providing a smooth surface for the roller to rotate within the inner plates.
Master Link (Connecting Link)
The master link is a specialized outer plate that has removable pins or clips, allowing for easy assembly and disassembly of the British Standard chain. It is used to connect the two ends of the chain together.
Side Plates
Some British Standard roller chains have side plates that run parallel to the inner and outer plates. These plates provide additional protection and support for the chain.
Materials of British Standard Chain
Carbon steel
Carbon steel is a widely used British standard roller chain material with high strength and wear resistance. It is widely used in central air conditioners, washing machines and other home appliances. It has high strength and can withstand large loads and impacts, but its corrosion resistance is not as good as other materials.
Alloy steel
Alloy steel is a British standard roller chain material with high hardness and good wear resistance. It is usually used in heavy-load or high-speed operation equipment, such as steel, mining, cement and other industries.
It has high hardness, strong wear resistance, and good tensile resistance, but is relatively heavy and requires greater sealing and lubrication.
Stainless steel

Installation of British Standard Chain
Preparation
Check equipment to ensure that general transmission requirements are correct (e.g. flexible couplings, flywheel, means of drive adjustment).
Check condition and rigidity of the shafts and bearings, particularly if there has been considerable previous service with an alternative method of transmission.Replace or correct if necessary.
Driver and driven shafts should be checked to ensure they are level and parallel to each other. This also applies to the idler shaft, if present.
Use a spirit level and adjustable comparator bar or micrometer between shafts at extreme points on each side of the drive. Correct any parallelism errors and mark a permanent data line for the adjustable shaft.
Place sprockets or respective shafts in approximate alignment and fit the keys in accordance with correct engineering practice. Do not secure keys at this stage.
Care must be taken with sprockets of split design to ensure perfect adjoining of the faces of each half. Proceed with the key fitting after the halves are finally bolted together, otherwise the key can prevent correct assembly and subsequently result in malgearing.
Verify that key heads will not project beyond the width of any chain cases.
Checking Sprocket Alignment
Accurate alignment of shafts and sprocket tooth faces provides a uniform distribution of load across the entire chain width and contributes substantially to maximum drive life.
Use a straightedge across the machined faces of the sprockets in several different positions, if possible, as a check against wobble. A nylon or similar line is a good substitute for a straightedge, particularly on longer center distances.
Should endwise “float” of shafts be present, make due allowance so that sprocket alignment is correct at the mid position of “float”.
When alignment is correct within closest practical limits, drive the keys home and take a final check on sprocket alignment.
Installation of Chain
Ensure the British Standard chain is clean and free of debris and place around the sprockets, observing instructions where matched strands are involved. In chain with two or more strands, joining is most easily accomplished at the midspan of the drive, drawing the chain ends together with a chain clamp or rope tackle block. Ensure that the strength of the drawing tackle is sufficient to hold the chain. When inserting the joining link of multi-strand chain, ensure the intermediate plates are assembled. Do not detach the drawing tackle until the link is completely assembled. When only partially inserted through the inner link, the weight of the chain on release can splay or distort unsupported bearing pins.
Adjust the chain using the data mark mentioned in the preparation section to retain shaft parallelism.
Lubrication Method of British Standard Chain




Manual Lubrication
Using an oil can, aerosol spray or brush, this method requires the lubricant to be manually added once a day or every eight running hours into the gap between the inner and outer link plate of the loose side of the British Standard chain
Oil Bath Lubrication
Here the British Standard chain is placed in an enclosure with the bottom of the chain fully immersed in a pool of oil. The correct immersion depth is important as if it’s too deep or too shallow may cause the oil to heat up resulting in oxidation of the oil.
Drip Lubrication
Oil from the oil cup is fed via wick oilers, needle oilers or drip oilers, and supplied by drip feeding. This method is only suitable for low bearing pressure drives. With quantity dependent on speed, the standard procedure is to apply 5-20 drops of oil per minute for every strand of British Standard chain.
Oil-Ring Lubrication
This method has the British Standard chain running above the oil level, with a rotating disc submerged into the lower oil level which spreads oil against the casing walls from where it runs down onto the chain via drip rails. The disc needs be mounted on both sides of the sprocket in a sealed enclosure. It should be noted that this method of chain lubrication is only effective at speeds in excess of 300 RPM.
Force-Fed Lubrication
In force-fed lubrication, an oil pump and oil feeding pipe supplies a continuous spray of oil to the inside of the lower span of British Sandard chain to ensure the circulating cooling of the chains. The spray nozzles should be situated near the gearing places of the chain and sprocket, and the number of nozzles need to be more than the amount of chain strands to make them aim at the gap of each row’s link plate.
